Detailed Information on India - Shri Shakti Alternative Energy Ltd.

Project Summary

The project encompasses the expansion of SSAEL’s network of “Energy Stores” in the southern states of India. SSAEL is sponsored by the Shri Shakti Group, well known for Shakti Gas, a leading private sector LPG retail company in India, which has over 300 retail outlets and over 350,000 customers in South India. SSAEL was established in 1998 to leverage Shakti Gas’ existing network by expanding its energy services to include alternative energy products. In addition to Shakti Gas dealers (as originally envisaged), SSAEL is building a marketing channel for alternative energy products with dealers and distributors from the gas distributors of PSU oil companies, electrical appliances dealers and sanitary ware distributors all over India.

PVMTI Investment

PVMTI has committed US$ 2.2 million in equity, loans and grant in order to assist in the expansion of the Energy Store network.

Sponsor Comments

There is a great synergy between LP Gas and Solar PV. SSAEL is selling Friendly Geysers and Friendly Heaters as an alternative to electric geysers and heaters and even kerosene and coal heater called “bukharis” in remote and hilly areas in the North and North Eastern parts of India. In those same areas, SSAEL is able to develop business for its Solar gadgets in the consumer market without any government subsidies. The PVMTI funds have been helpful in building awareness about the alternative energy products that we introduced for the first time in India and in building a marketing channel leveraging the existing networks in various trades.

Current Status

Shri Shakti has faced some challenges on account of regulatory changes in the LPG market and bureaucratic hurdles in the large scale public sector PV plants. However, SSAEL has redefined their strategy and expanded their product portfolio to include solar thermal sales. It is in the process of establishing its own manufacturing of hot water collectors. The company has also entered the consulting arena and has been awarded some prestigious contracts
