(SELCO) was established to market, install, and service Solar Home Systems (SHS) in south India. Registered in Bangalore in March 1995, and doing business as the Solar Electric Light Company (SELCO), SELCO has achieved international recognition as the first company to concentrate on marketing and servicing SHS in the rural Indian market. The Company's headquarters is located in Bangalore, which oversees the network of Regional Branch Offices and Solar Service Centers. The company solicited financing from PVMTI to strengthen its service center network and to mobilise local banks to provide affordable end consumer financing to its clients. PVMTI InvestmentPVMTI has committed a total of US$ 1.1 million in loans and grant to the project. These funds will be instrumental in establishing a core business in order to attract commercial debt to fund subsequent expansion of the network. SELCO strongly believes that successful penetration of the rural SHS market depends fundamentally on meeting the needs of its customers. From the beginning, SELCO has understood that selling SHS in rural markets requires not only providing SHS components to rural customers, but also the necessary customer information, financing, installation, training, and all other products and services necessary to develop a sustainable sales and service infrastructure. To meet these needs, SELCO had to invent itself as a retail service business fundamentally driven by customer needs rather than selling manufacturers’ products. Current StatusSELCO was the pioneer in establishing links with rural banks to provide credit to rural customers for purchase of solar home systems. It has also set up a service network to provide reliable, prompt and affordable after sales services. The company is now expanding into the western states of Gujarat and Maharashtra.
